Drill Bits - Centre Drills

A centre drill (also called a combined drill and countersink) is a short, rigid drill bit used in machining to create a precise starting hole—usually to locate the center of a workpiece before further drilling or turning.

Centre Drills were designed to provide a location for a Tailstock Centre but are commonly used to make a small starting indentation to guide further drilling in a Lathe.

  • It’s short and very stiff, so it doesn’t flex easily
  • It has a small pilot drill tip + a 60° (or sometimes 90°) countersink
  • It produces a small, precise centre spot, not a deep hole
